Fixed vs. Removable Retainers After Invisalign or Braces
If you recently finished Invisalign or braces, wearing a retainer is one of the most important steps in protecting your new smile. But should you choose a permanent fixed retainer or a removable clear retainer?
At My Orange County Orthodontist in Anaheim Hills, this is a question I discuss frequently with patients. Based on my clinical experience, I often prefer removable clear retainers rather than permanently bonding a wire behind the front teeth.
What Is a Fixed or Permanent Retainer?
A fixed retainer, sometimes called a permanent retainer or bonded retainer, is a thin wire bonded to the back of the front teeth after orthodontic treatment.
The biggest advantage is convenience. Because the retainer stays attached to the teeth, you don’t have to remember to put it in every night.
However, the wire can make brushing and especially flossing more difficult. Plaque and tartar can accumulate around the wire and bonding material if these areas are not cleaned carefully.
What I Have Seen in My Own Orthodontic Practice
One of the reasons I have become more cautious about fixed retainers comes from my own clinical experience.
Over the years, I have reviewed thousands of dental X-rays, including panoramic X-rays. I have personally seen patients with long-term fixed retainers who developed significant plaque and calculus accumulation, gum inflammation, gum recession and, in some cases, bone loss around the lower front teeth.
Does that mean the fixed retainer caused the bone loss in every case? No. Periodontal bone loss can have multiple contributing factors.
However, when I repeatedly see periodontal problems developing around an area that is difficult for patients to clean, I take that seriously.
For me, successful orthodontic treatment isn’t simply about keeping the teeth straight. We also need to think about the long-term health of the teeth, gums, bone and bite.
Why I Often Prefer Clear Removable Retainers
For many patients completing Invisalign treatment in Anaheim Hills or braces, I prefer a removable clear retainer.
Retainers After Invisalign
Finishing your final Invisalign aligner does not mean your orthodontic treatment is completely finished.
Teeth naturally have a tendency to shift after orthodontic treatment. That’s why retainers after Invisalign are so important for maintaining your new smile.
Depending on the patient, I may recommend a clear orthodontic retainer or another customized retention approach based on the patient’s tooth position, bite, gum health and risk of relapse.

Watch: Why I Don’t Routinely Recommend Fixed Retainers
In this short video, I explain my concerns about fixed retainers and why I often prefer removable clear retainers for my orthodontic patients.
Should I Remove My Permanent Retainer?
If you already have a permanent retainer, that doesn’t automatically mean it should be removed.
When I evaluate an existing fixed retainer, I look at several factors:
- Gum health
- Gum recession
- Bone levels when appropriate
- Plaque and calculus accumulation
- Condition of the bonded retainer
- Whether any teeth have shifted
- Your bite
- Your ability to floss and maintain good oral hygiene
For some patients, keeping the fixed retainer may be appropriate.
For others, I may recommend removing the permanent retainer and replacing it with a removable clear nighttime retainer.
What If My Teeth Have Already Shifted?
This is especially common in adults who had braces or Invisalign years ago and stopped wearing their retainers.
If the movement is very minor, a new retainer may sometimes be appropriate.
If the teeth have shifted more significantly, a retainer alone may not correct the problem. In selected cases, short-term Invisalign or limited orthodontic treatment may be able to move the teeth back into better positions before making new retainers.

Can a Retainer Help With TMJ or Jaw Discomfort?
In selected patients, the design of a removable appliance may take the patient’s bite, clenching habits or jaw symptoms into consideration.
However, a standard clear orthodontic retainer is not automatically a treatment for TMJ disorders. Jaw pain can have many different causes and should be properly evaluated before an appliance is recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions About Retainers
Which is better: a fixed retainer or removable retainer?
There is no single best retainer for every patient. The decision depends on tooth position, bite, gum health, oral hygiene, risk of relapse and how consistently the patient will wear a removable retainer.
Do I need a retainer after Invisalign?
Yes. Teeth can shift after Invisalign just as they can after braces. Retention is an important part of maintaining your orthodontic result.
Can I replace my permanent retainer with a clear retainer?
In many cases, yes. Your orthodontist should first evaluate your tooth positions, bite, gum health and existing retainer before removing the bonded wire and making a new clear retainer.
What happens if I stopped wearing my retainer and my teeth shifted?
Minor changes may sometimes be managed with a new retention plan. If more significant movement has occurred, limited Invisalign or another orthodontic treatment may be recommended before making the new retainer.
