Why Are Retainers So Important?

Teeth are not permanently locked into position after Invisalign or braces. They naturally have a tendency to move throughout life.

A properly fitted orthodontic retainer helps maintain the positions we worked to achieve during treatment. Without consistent retention, teeth can gradually shift, crowd or rotate again.

At My Orange County Orthodontist, we consider retention an important part of your overall orthodontic treatment — not an afterthought.

1
Teeth Naturally Shift

Changes can occur gradually even years after orthodontic treatment.

2
Protect Your Investment

Retainers help preserve the time and effort invested in your braces or Invisalign treatment.

3
Maintain Your Bite

Retention helps preserve both tooth alignment and the orthodontic result.

Types of Orthodontic Retainers

There is no single retainer that is ideal for every patient. Your orthodontist should consider your treatment, bite, oral hygiene, tooth positions and likelihood of relapse.

Traditional

Hawley Retainers

A Hawley retainer combines an acrylic base with a thin metal wire across the front teeth.

  • Durable construction
  • Removable for normal hygiene
  • Can sometimes be adjusted
  • Useful in selected orthodontic situations
Bonded

Fixed or Permanent Retainers

A thin wire is bonded behind the front teeth and remains in place continuously.

  • No need to remember nightly wear
  • Useful for selected patients
  • Requires careful daily hygiene
  • Needs long-term monitoring

Why We Often Prefer Removable Retainers

For many of our patients, Dr. Nasibi prefers a removable clear retainer after orthodontic treatment.

One major benefit is hygiene. Because the retainer can be removed, patients can brush and floss normally without having to clean around a permanently bonded wire.

With appropriate wear, clear retainers can provide excellent long-term retention while allowing patients to maintain normal oral hygiene.

Easy Flossing Remove your retainer and floss normally between every tooth.
Easy Cleaning Your teeth and your retainer can be cleaned separately.
Nearly Invisible Clear material makes the retainer very discreet while worn.
Nighttime Wear After the appropriate initial retention period, many patients transition to nighttime wear.

What About Permanent Fixed Retainers?

Fixed retainers can be appropriate and effective for selected patients. However, Dr. Nasibi does not automatically recommend a fixed retainer for everyone.

One reason is what Dr. Nasibi has observed over years of clinical practice and review of dental X-rays.

In patients who have had long-term fixed retainers, Dr. Nasibi has personally observed cases with significant plaque and calculus accumulation, gum inflammation, gum recession and, in some patients, bone loss around the lower front teeth.

This does not mean that a fixed retainer caused the bone loss in every case. Periodontal bone loss can have multiple contributing factors.

However, a bonded wire can make daily flossing and cleaning more difficult. When deciding between fixed and removable retention, we consider not only tooth stability but also the patient's ability to maintain excellent long-term oral hygiene.

Our philosophy: keeping your teeth straight matters — but so does keeping your teeth, gums and supporting tissues healthy.

Retainers After Invisalign or Braces

When you finish Invisalign or braces, your teeth need time to adapt to their new positions. Retainer wear is particularly important during this period.

Your exact wear schedule will depend on your individual orthodontic treatment and stability. Over time, many patients can transition to wearing a removable retainer primarily while sleeping.

Long-term nighttime retention is often the best way to reduce the chance of future orthodontic relapse.

Lost, Broken or No Longer Fitting?

Don't wait too long if your retainer is lost, cracked or suddenly feels tight. A change in fit can sometimes be an early sign that your teeth are beginning to move.

Lost Retainer Contact us before your teeth have time to shift significantly.
Broken Retainer We can evaluate whether the retainer can continue to be used or should be replaced.
Teeth Have Shifted Dr. Nasibi can evaluate whether a new retainer or limited orthodontic correction is more appropriate.

Why I Don't Routinely Use Fixed Retainers

In this short video, Dr. Pejman Nasibi discusses his approach to fixed and removable orthodontic retainers and why long-term oral hygiene matters when choosing a retention strategy.

Common Questions About Orthodontic Retainers

Do I need a retainer after Invisalign?

Yes. Teeth can shift after Invisalign just as they can after braces. Wearing your retainer as directed is an important part of maintaining your Invisalign result.

How long do I have to wear my retainer?

Retention is generally a long-term commitment. Your initial wear schedule depends on your treatment, but many patients eventually transition to nighttime wear.

Which type of retainer is best?

There is no single best retainer for everyone. Dr. Nasibi considers your tooth positions, bite, oral hygiene, orthodontic history and risk of relapse before recommending a retention strategy.

Are clear retainers better than permanent retainers?

Each type has advantages and limitations. Dr. Nasibi often prefers removable clear retainers because they allow normal brushing and flossing, but a fixed retainer may still be appropriate for selected patients.

Can you replace a retainer made by another orthodontist?

Yes. We can evaluate your current tooth positions and bite and determine whether a replacement retainer is appropriate, even if your original orthodontic treatment was completed elsewhere.

What if my teeth already moved after braces?

If only a small amount of movement has occurred, the solution may be straightforward. If the teeth have shifted more significantly, Dr. Nasibi may recommend limited orthodontic treatment or Invisalign before making your new retainers.

Where can I get a replacement retainer near Anaheim Hills?

My Orange County Orthodontist provides clear and replacement retainer evaluations in Anaheim Hills for patients from Orange, Placentia, Yorba Linda, Villa Park and nearby communities.
