Braces vs Invisalign: My Personal Experience as an Orthodontist

I’ve had both Invisalign and braces—not just as an orthodontist, but as a patient.

My journey started when I was younger. I was told to wait for treatment, but looking back now as a specialist, I believe early orthodontic treatment would have made a big difference.

Later, during dental school, I experienced Invisalign firsthand… and eventually braces as well.

My Invisalign Experience

I first tried Invisalign during dental school. A dentist friend of mine was learning Invisalign, and I became one of his early cases.

While Invisalign worked and straightened my teeth, the experience wasn’t perfect.

  • Aligners are removable, which is convenient
  • I lost aligners more than once (yes… wrapped in a napkin 😅)
  • I had some soreness and irritation
  • Speech felt slightly off at times
  • There was noticeable salivation initially
Invisalign is great—but it requires discipline and consistency.

Also, because my provider was still learning, some enamel reduction (IPR) was done that left my teeth slightly less ideal than I would have liked.

My Braces Experience

Later, I chose braces to improve my smile further—and this experience was very different.

  • Braces are fixed—you don’t have to think about them
  • No risk of losing anything
  • More controlled and precise tooth movement
  • Great for complex cases

Even with clear braces, they are still visible—but the tradeoff is reliability and consistency.

Braces vs Invisalign: My Honest Recommendation

Choose Invisalign if:

You want a more discreet, removable option and are disciplined with wear.

Choose Braces if:

You prefer a fixed, worry-free option that doesn’t rely on compliance.

Important: Invisalign can sometimes open the bite, which may require additional steps like elastics to correct. This is where experience and proper planning matter.

Why Specialist Experience Matters

Today, many general dentists offer Invisalign—and that’s great. However, orthodontic treatment is complex, and as a specialist, I believe training and experience play a major role in achieving the best results.

Orthodontists spend years focused exclusively on tooth movement, bite correction, and long-term stability.

Braces vs Invisalign FAQs

Is Invisalign better than braces?
Invisalign is a great option for patients who want a more discreet and removable treatment. However, braces may be more effective and reliable for complex cases since they do not depend on patient compliance.
Do braces work faster than Invisalign?
In many cases, braces can be more efficient because they are fixed and continuously working. Invisalign results depend on how consistently the aligners are worn.
What are the downsides of Invisalign?
Invisalign requires discipline, as aligners must be worn 20–22 hours per day. They can be lost, may affect speech initially, and in some cases may require elastics to correct bite issues.
Are braces easier than Invisalign?
Many patients find braces easier because they are fixed and do not require remembering to wear them. Invisalign requires responsibility and consistency to be effective.
Which is better for adults: braces or Invisalign?
Both are effective. Invisalign is popular for aesthetics, while braces may offer more control for certain movements depending on the case.
Can general dentists provide Invisalign?
Yes, many general dentists offer Invisalign. However, orthodontists specialize in tooth movement and bite correction, which can be important for achieving optimal results in more complex cases.
